We have found a wonderful
source in Zimbabwe for the often sought after verdite stone pieces.
Verditeis a semi-precious stone is over 3.5 million years old and
ranges in color from emerald to brown. Verdite s a very hard stone,
which makes it a challenging sculpting medium. It is only found in
southern Africa, with the highest quality being found in Zimbabwe.
Verdite is often called "Africa's Green Gold" and is highly
sought after by artists. Only the more experienced sculptor will dare
use this medium. Verdite rates between a 7.0-9.0, depending upon the
amount of Corrundum inclusions, on the universally used Hohs hardness
scale. Unfortunately, verdite is fast becoming rare and is difficult
to find. Carvings from this stone will become increasingly more valuable.
Also included in our collection are beautiful pieces of sculpture
made from rapocco stone. Rapocco stone is a softer medium than verdite
and therefore easier for the artists to work with. They are able
to create unique pieces for our customers. The rapocco sculptures
are brought to you from Zimbabwe as well.
And we have from Kenya very nice soapstone embossed elephant and
hippo bookends. Check this page often. We will be adding several
more unique pieces as time goes on.
